It was Wednesday morning. Early morning. 8:00 a.m. to be exact. The doctors and nurses were walking the halls. It was a busy morning. They were doing their routine check ups on the patients. Checking to see if the conditions of any of the patients had changed yet and to make sure others were comfortable and alright. Depending on what the case was with the patients they were checking. A nurse from far down the hall happened to have a clipboard with the information that belonged to one ‘Adrian Taylor.’ She remembered hearing the name somewhere but could not remember where from. She had a tired look on her face. She had just arrived and he was the first one on her list. She raised a free hand up to her face and wiped the sands from her eyes, as well as letting out a long yawn. She was just waking up. Her first stop along the way was not going to be at the patient’s room just yet. She had walked into the lounge and made her way over to a coffee machine. Setting down the clipboard on the table in front of her, she reached into her purse that was slung over her shoulder and pulled out a coffee mug. Yes, she carried her coffee mug in her purse. Not all the time, just at work. The nurse then set the mug down on the table and reached over to grab the pot of coffee. Then she went ahead to poor herself some into her mug before setting it back into the machine. She then grabbed a hold of her mug and made her way back through the halls. Taking a quick sip from it to get her blood flowing and her to be more awake and alert. She proceeded on down the hall. Weaving her way around the nurses, doctors, and hospital bed moving through out the halls. It certainly was a busy morning today. She smiled and waved to the nurses at the front desk as she walked by. She lifted her mug up to her lips again to take another quick sip from it. Slowly approaching her first patient of the morning’s check ups. She paused for a moment in the hall as she suddenly got a bad feeling. She could sense something was wrong in the air. She could feel that there just was something right at the moment. But she began to shake off the feeling. She was in a hospital. Unfortunately, the bitter truth is some patients don’t make it and some get worse. Maybe it was just one of those feelings. She had sensed such things like this before with other patients who were struggling to survive in their hospital beds. The nurse shook her head and slowly proceeded toward Room 23. Moving around the busy workers and patients being moved through the halls still. She turned slightly and began to push the door open with her shoulder, since her hands were full with the clipboard on Adrian Taylor and her coffee. Once inside, she was looking down at the clipboard in her hand and sipping her coffee again. There was a loud sound within the room but it didn’t register in her mind just yet. A frown came across her face as she read that this patient was in a coma with no signs of recovery in the near future. It saddened her to know that there are people who remain in a state of unconsciousness, completely unaware of the world around them. Finally arriving at the hospital bed, she set down the coffee mug on the table next to the bed. Her eyes slowly raised from the clipboard to see…
An empty bed…
Her eyes widened as she saw this. IVs and other such wires that were hooked up to the patient were laid across the bed. That loud sound that didn’t register in her mind a moment ago was the sound of a flat lined machine. It was shocking. There were only two answers that she believed could explain what she saw before her eyes. She was well aware of what had been going on in Canada in recent weeks. Now realizing where she remembered the name ‘Adrian Taylor’ from.
One… he had either gotten up and left without anyone noticing…
Or…
Worse…
The nurse slowly began to back step from the hospital bed. She turned and quickly rushed out the door. As she rushed out the door, she bumped into a doctor who was coming across her path at the same time. The doctor noticed the startled look on the nurse’s face and asked her…
Doctor: “What’s wrong Theresa?”
Nurse: “T…the patient…. He’s… he’s gone…”
Doctor: “What?! What did you say?!”
Nurse: “The coma patient… Adrian Taylor… He’s… missing…”
Doctor: “This can’t be… Coma patients just don’t get up and walk away… Unless…”
Nurse: “I don’t think he woke up…”
Doctor: “Why do you say that…?”
Nurse: “I… I just have… a bad feeling about this…”
The doctor walked towards the door and stepped into the room. Looking inside at the empty bed, getting a concerned look on his face as well. The nurse had followed him in and looked over his shoulder at the empty bed. The doctor looked back at the nurse and said to her…
Doctor: “Start a search for Adrian Taylor. He couldn’t have gotten that far.”
The nurse nodded her head and responded….
Nurse: “Yes…”
The nurse turned around and proceeded out the door. Off to go call a search for a missing person in… or outside of the hospital….
